Egypt’s Elections: Egypt`s presidential campaigner killed before elections
A senior campaigner for Egypt’s presidential hopeful Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has been shot dead before the beginning of elections.
Mohamed Fathy, who was also a member of the Tamarod movement, was killed early on Monday near his house in Nahia in the city of Giza.
Tamarod initiated the protests that led to the ouster of Egypt’s first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi, in July 2013 by former army chief Sisi.
“Fathy was assassinated while requesting authorizations from campaign members and Sisi representatives," Mohamed Hassan, Tamarod’s coordinator in Giza, said, adding, "His body is now at Cairo's Zeinhom morgue."
"The incident is currently under investigation," Giza security chief, Kamal al-Daly, said.
The polls began amid a boycott by the country’s Muslim Brotherhood movement.
Polling stations opened at 0600 GMT on Monday for the 53 million registered voters in the country of over 80 million.
The two-day vote pits Sisi against his leftist opponent Hamdeen Sabahi.
Sisi’s victory in the presidential vote would place Egypt’s presidency back in the hands of a top military official just three years after Egyptians rose up against former dictator, Hosni Mubarak, an air force officer who ruled Egypt for nearly three decades.
