Bomb Blast Hits World Cup Viewing Center: Nigerian Police Warns Soccer Fans

The bomb attack outside a World Cup viewing center in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state, killed at least 21 people.

Nigerian police have warned soccer fans against gathering in public viewing centers to watch FIFA World Cup matches.

"We're not calling for a total proscription. We would rather as a first choice sensitize and educate the public so they can take informed decisions,” Mba said, a national police spokesmen.

Nigerian officials usually blame the Boko Haram Takfiri militants for such attacks.

Open-air viewing sites for televised soccer matches are popular across Nigeria.
Such centers have reportedly been closed in at least two states due to security concerns.

The militants have repeatedly targeted such centers in the past. Two bombings in recent weeks killed at least 40 people in two northern cities.
