
Protest rally has been held in Brazil over high public costs of the ongoing 2014 FIFA World Cup in the country.
Demonstrators took to the streets in the city of Porto Alegre on today when Australia was playing the Netherlands.
The protesters shouted slogans against the government spending for the games.they express their anger at the high costs of hosting the soccer tournament for the South American country.
The protest was held despite the heavy police presence in the city.
The protesters threatened the police with stones and Molotov cocktails. In response, the officers fired tear gas and rubber bullets, and used water cannon to disperse them.
Some 30 people, including 11 teenagers, were arrested during the protest in Fortaleza, Brazil has seen months of similar protests over the $11 billion expense of the sports event.
The protests, that have at times been accompanied by union strikes, have been described as the largest seen in the country for more than 20 years.
